Thought Oppo would be interested in this. My friends company has invented a UV door handle that is self sanitizing and can be installed in place of the current handle!! Please get the word out and share. It’s great to see such innovation in these trying times.

A copper handle also self sterilizes

Curious how long it takes copper to self sterilize. That could be the difference.

If the light is bright enough to be visible as blue, it might either not have enough UV to sterilize properly or it might emit enough UV that it would exceed IEC 62471 permissible exposure levels.
The next problem is that this handle might require FDA approval. There are fairly strict rules about what constitutes a medical claim. I’m not an expert on whether sterilization falls under FDA rules, but it may. The FDA even went after General Mills for making claims without following FDA rules.

Regulatory compliance on something that seems simple can get complicated quickly.

Well that is a new and exciting kinja failure:

We use UV to disinfect drinking water. The strength of those lights would burn out your retinas. It still takes con tact time too. Not saying this is a terrible idea but would probably be better to put a full spectrum bulb in there and grow some weed.

ask you buddy to make sure he researches real UV-C LEDs and not the fake non-germicidal ones. real ones will cause eye damage if you look directly at them, and skin damage with direct exposure. They
generally don’t generate much visible light unless accompanied by blue LEDs for the fun of it. They are typically constructed
with metal housings under quartz, not those plastic strips. Lots of non-
germicical “
UV-
C LED”
scams out there. This guy does some good debunking.

Getting skin cancer to prevent corona. You’re friend is a real genius.
Please tell me this is a joke amd that people aren’t actually this stupid.
IM is right, we’ve lost our fucking minds. Tell your friend to stick his mercury lamps up his ass.

C oincidentally ozone generating UV-B bulbs are one of the many ways people have been known to deodorize their grow room exhausts.

Brass as well, but takes about 8 hours for both iirc.

This does not seem safe or even
possible with current technology. UVC (as featured in welding arcs)
causes severe skin and eye damage so nobody can be in the same room as an operating emitter.
The plan
mentions
Far UVC, but they don’t claim they are actually using it,
and the research I found couldn’t say for certain if it was safe to be around
. Regardless of any research, I wouldn’t take the opportunity to be near one. Furthermore, UVC (including Far, apparently) causes rapid degradation of plastics and other similar materials. It would turn your office chair to dust in a week.
If Far UVC is safe, then it can’t be generated by LEDs. There are LEDs that can generate UVC, but their 280nm wavelength is at the very border. They are hideously expensive and inefficient though, and don’t make the blue light shown in the picture. That’s a characteristic of dangerous mercury UVC lamps. It appears 222nm sterilization-oriented excimer lamps are almost ready, but they’re not actually available yet and I can’t find any that would fit in a door handle.
It’s a noble goal, but there’s several show-stopping problems in the plan as written now.

Uuuuhhhh...... Did you have an independent lab do testing with this product? Might want to tell your friends that many government agencies can, and will, shut you down if you can’t back this up with evidence.
